Product Designer.

Creative Strategist.

Always a Storyteller.

I'm Mark, and I've spent 20+ years building high-impact digital products for startups and premier brands.

One-of-a-kind multidisciplinary skill set

Deep, broad experience. Always learning.
Beyond the UX and Product Design expertise you'd expect, I'm also a:

Lifelong
Coder

I wrote my first computer program at 8 years old and just kept going. I was the captain of my high school’s regional-competition-winning programming team. (I also lettered in basketball and ran track, so I was only, like, 97% nerd.)

Fluency in the full stack–from Javascript, Python, PHP, and Rails to Linux and databases–allows me to build what I need, whether it be a functional prototype or production-ready front-end code. It’s a force multiplier when using modern tools like prototyping software and AI.

This deep technical knowledge makes me a unique and invaluable asset in cross-functional teams, connecting creative, business, product, and engineering. It also means that I speak the language of programmers; that I understand technical constraints, possibilities, and levels of effort.

  • Accurate Scope & Level of Effort: I have a feel for how complex and time consuming a feature will be to scaffold, document, code, and test. Things that seem simple can require extensive development. I can propose alternatives that save engineering hours.
  • Rapid Prototyping: I’ve long been able to stand up a database and quickly write a functional, dynamic prototype. AI makes it even faster. Dynamic prototypes help identify feature gaps, accelerate UX/UI iterations, and allow for accurate user testing.
  • Leveraging AI & New Tools: Is AI a new tool, or is it a whole new toolbox? Regardless, incorporating leading-edge tech into Design, UX, and production workflows has always been challenging but fun. I believe human creativity, strategic thinking, and decision-making taste will always be essential–no matter the toolset.
  • Seamless Developer Collaboration: Every company has a different set of expectations for product design hand-off to engineering. My teams have delivered everything from Photoshop/Illustrator/Sketch files, to Figma and Framer mockups, to plug-and-play HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Technical Realities: I understand data flows, user authentication, and how to structure APIs. My UX work anticipates edge cases, loading states, and data latency long before the QA team starts testing.

Visual &
Graphic Artist

I minored in Art & Graphic Design at Northwestern. I've worked as an advertising art director, a UI design specialist, and the creative director for a digital sports startup acquired by ESPN. I’m a relentless doodler, painter, photographer, and aspiring animator. I direct, shoot, and edit film and video. I volunteer with non-profits and schools to help with posters, flyers, and other graphic design work.

I bridge the gap between artistic expression and user-centric problem-solving to build delightful digital experiences. Drawing skill, color sense, proportion, emotional response, and aesthetic taste inform everything I do, from concept, to sketch, to interactive prototype, to final design:

  • Sketching helps me to explore layouts and user flows before touching the computer, rapidly iterating and freeing up creativity.
  • Inspiration & Taste ensure products are visually pleasing, accessible, and attuned to modern design.
  • Motion & Animation used thoughtfully helps guide users, creating moments of delight and connection.
  • Craft & Attention to Detail result in interfaces that feel sturdy, elegant, and effortless.

SKILLS // Visual Design: typography, color theory, composition, and brand consistency. // Motion Design: micro-interactions, dynamic transitions, and storytelling. // Creative Direction: blue-sky thinking, ideation, rough layouts, and storyboarding.

Writer
& Editor

Storytelling is who I am. I built my foundation by reading a novel a day as a teen, then as a freelance journalist, copywriter, and graduate of Northwestern University’s exclusive 10-person creative writing program, where I studied under renowned authors Joseph Epstein and Reginald Gibbons. My creative writing includes everything from fiction to songs to screenplays.

As a UX-focused Product Designer, this background helps me translate complex user journeys into engaging experiences. I use narrative development and user research to design intuitive products that connect with audiences.

  • User-Centric Storytelling: Fiction writing requires deep empathy, an essential tool in mapping UX journeys and understanding user motivations, pain points, and goals.
  • Information Architecture: Journalism and editing have honed my ability to chunk and structure information, establish hierarchies, and ensure users find exactly what they need exactly when they need it.
  • Research & Refinement: My background in interviewing and research aids in conducting effective, non-leading user interviews and usability testing.
  • Brand Voice & Content Strategy: People talk differently. So do companies. Let’s write a long and engaging story together with our customers.
  • Accessibility & Clarity: My copywriting experience leads to buttons, error messages, and onboarding flows that are inclusive and frustration-free. The editor in me ensures the site’s text is concise, accessible, and easy for diverse user bases to digest.
  • Stakeholder Buy-In: Storytelling is critical for getting stakeholders to care about design. I don’t show screens. I tell the story of Who, Why, and How, framing the product experience around the user’s narrative.

UX
LEADER

After 20+ years of shipping user-focused digital products and experiences, I like to think that I’ve learned a few things, sometimes the hard way....

Perspective. Principles. Priorities.

I’ve taught junior designers and presented to C-suites. Sweated the pixel-level details of an interaction pattern and led strategic design sessions with multi-departmental teams. I’ve had ups and downs. Electrifying successes and a couple of Frankenstein monsters that stayed cold on the table.

Through it all, I’ve learned to navigate complex design challenges with clarity, bridging user needs and business objectives.

I’m always looking for what’s next.

  • Career-long Commitment to Accessibility: Evangelist for usability and inclusive design.
  • Product Strategy and System Thinking: Applying experience and data to navigate ambiguity and drive product innovation, while understanding how individual product features fit into a broader, long-term picture.
  • Leadership & Mentorship: Building and mentoring cross-functional team of designers, fostering a culture of constructive critique, design thinking, and career growth.
  • Design Systems & Scalability: Developed enterprise-wide design systems and style guides, establishing UI, UX, and visual standards.
  • Workflow Innovation: Always searching for continuous improvement: efficiences, new tools, and shorter feedback loops.
  • Stakeholder Alignment: Facilitated design thinking workshops with C-level stakeholders and engineering teams, communicating complex design rationales to unblock key strategic decisions.
  • Analysis & Optimization: Identifying key drop-off points and redesigning the user journey to boost conversion rates.
  • User Research & Empathy: Leading user research initiatives, turning customer pain points into actionable design improvements via interviews, surveys, and usability testing.
  • Information Architecture: Structuring complex data.
  • Wireframing & Prototyping: Validating concepts and interactive flows with low- to high-fidelity mockups and tools like Figma.
  • Interaction Design & Micro-animations: Designing seamless, intuitive user states (e.g., hover effects, error handling, transitions) that reduce cognitive load.
